This Friday is the first ever regional heat for the British Street Food Awards. In the past 6 years the awards have been fairly London-centric from the rest of the country’s point of view, but this year they are taking to the road. First stop on that journey, to ease people out of the big city gradually, is Birmingham.

The Jabberwocky will be representing the Midlands from a gazebo, because the van is still in bits (that exploded pipe from last week is pottering around the living room) but we are still going to be firing out the best things that can happen between two slices of bread. Naturally, there will also be a new one to try. This may well be the only opportunity you will ever have to see this much top class street food locally, so it really shouldn’t be missed.

Friday, 2nd May – 5:30 pm onwards @ Digbeth Dining Club, Lower Trinity Street, Digbeth. B9 4AG (there is parking opposite).

You will want to maximise your time here, so we’ve got you covered with a thoughtful to-do list. I might even make a print out.

British Street Food Awards Activities

No 1.:  Trying Everything.

Not for the faint hearted. There will be 18 traders at the street food awards in total, so you need to plan your route wisely and gather friends. If you do manage to strike out on your own and consume all twenty come let us know, we’ll call you an ambulance or something. Either way; consider the gauntlet to have just been thrown.

No 2.: Vote!

Democracy meets street food. Draw your smart phone, download the app now and you are ready to go on the night. As far as I’m aware you have to be near Digbeth to be able to vote, so if you were thinking of casting a vote for the Jabberwocky in absentia (thanks, by the way) please get your driving gloves on and trundle down to see us.

No 3.: Sweepstake it.

Nothing like a tinsey little bit ‘o gambling to make it worth staying till the end. To simplify it, I even made you a kit. You’re welcome! The picture is there to be descriptive and pretty, so get the full version here.

 No 4.: Street Food Bingo!

Everyone loves a little bit of bingo to get you through the day, so give a copy to everyone who can be there on the night and achieve glory. First person to get a bingo should really be bought a meal of their choice by the losers. Just saying. Here’s a printable version.

No5.: Share it with the World.

The British street food awards, and street food in general, are all about the twitters, facebooks, pinterests, instgrams and blogs of this world. Showing your appreciation to a vendor by boshing out the social media, posting pictures to the web to gather imaginary internet points or just saying thanks in person are all excellent and much appreciated ways to make that trader’s day better, regardless of who actually wins on the night.

That should give you enough to be getting along with! Hopefully see you there, have an excellent night and don’t forget to download an print off lots of bingo sheets while you’re still at work. Much more economical and I’m pretty sure it saves trees like that.
